Brand Authority added a second view of a business
Moz introduced Brand Authority in Domain Overview and through its API. Its announcement explains the use of brand-related search information to estimate brand strength. It also shows Brand Authority beside Domain Authority so users can compare the two. Moz introduces Brand Authority, August 7, 2023
A familiar business and a strong link profile are not identical
A well-known local business might have loyal customers and a modest website. Another website might have a large collection of links while few people remember the name behind it. A buyer evaluating either business needs more than one view.
That is the appeal of the distinction. It can encourage a better discussion about what is already working and what needs attention. It can also create confusion if a report presents both scores as interchangeable forms of authority.
How we would use the two-score comparison
We would treat the difference as a reason to investigate. If brand familiarity looks strong but the website is weak, the next question concerns the online experience. If the reverse appears true, we would look at how the business becomes known beyond the pages themselves.
These are working questions, not automatic conclusions from a score. A purchase decision still needs customer and business information. The Moz buying comparison helps decide whether the reporting work belongs in the paid tool. The Domain Authority update story explains why the meaning and calculation of a metric must stay attached to its number.
