Ahrefs rebuilt an underused part of the product
In the launch post, Tim Soulo described Keywords Explorer as one of the less-used tools in Ahrefs before the rebuild. The new version expanded keyword ideas and introduced a stronger emphasis on search volume and click-related data. The later 3.0 retrospective also identifies 2016 as a major investment in the keyword tool. Ahrefs Keywords Explorer 2.0 announcement; Ahrefs Keywords Explorer 3.0 retrospective
A keyword count is only the start of the decision
A content team can build an enormous list of phrases and still have no clear plan for what to publish. The buyer value appears when a report helps distinguish topics worth investigating from topics that only look attractive in a spreadsheet.
This milestone matters because it widened the reason to open Ahrefs. Someone evaluating it only as a backlink product could miss work the team might otherwise pay another tool to do. The reverse also matters: buying a wider tool does not guarantee that every part will be used.
How we would compare the keyword workflow
We would start with a subject the business knows well and follow it from the first idea to a realistic content brief. Can the team understand the competing pages? Does the data help narrow the subject? Is the report clear enough to use without a second person translating it?
Those are better buying questions than whether a launch article claimed the biggest database. The Ahrefs versus Semrush comparison connects this history to the current choice. Figures and screens in the 2016 announcement describe that period and should not be copied into a current plan comparison.
