The Ahrefs bill that sends people shopping
Ahrefs used to be the tool you grew into. Now a lot of Marketers grow out of it.
Lite is $129 a month, and that is before you have written a single article. Standard is $249, which is nearly $3,000 a year, and every added person costs more on top.
For one person with a laptop or a small agency watching its margins, that is not a software line. It is the thing you cancel first when a client leaves.

Cheap alternatives to Ahrefs, side by side
Most of the Ahrefs price pays for its web crawler, which builds the backlink index. That is the one part a cheaper tool cannot copy, so the table below shows what each swap keeps and what it gives up.
Prices checked October 18, 2026. Annual billing is assumed where it is the normal way to buy.
Cheaper Ahrefs alternatives, published pricing
| Tool | Realistic monthly cost | The job it does well | What it gives up |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE Ranking | $103.20 annual, $129 monthly | Closest full-suite replacement | Backlink index size |
| Mangools | $37.70 annual (Basic), $52.70 Premium | Keyword research and rank tracking | Backlink depth |
| Ubersuggest | $290 once (lifetime Individual) | Simple reports for beginners | Backlink depth |
| Serpstat | From $50 annual (Individual) | All-in-one for a small team | Consistency of data by market |
| KeySearch | $20 annual, $24 monthly | Keyword difficulty on a budget | Anything beyond keywords |
Which Ahrefs alternative fits which job
You want one cheaper tool that covers most of what Ahrefs does. SE Ranking. It handles rank tracking, site audits and client reports, so it is the nearest thing to a full swap. The backlink index is smaller, which you will notice if link research is a daily task.
Keyword research is the whole job. Mangools. It does this one job honestly, the screens are calm, and you will not miss what it leaves out.
You are new and want simple reports. Ubersuggest. It is the easiest to learn and the lifetime plans are paid once. Treat its backlink numbers as a rough sketch.
You want one tool for a small team. Serpstat. The interface is busy and the data is stronger in large markets than small ones.
You mostly need keyword difficulty scores. KeySearch. It is the cheapest monthly plan here and does that job. It does little else.
Link building is your job. Stay on Ahrefs, or save for two months and buy it later. Every cheaper index is smaller, and a link strategy built on a smaller index misses most of the picture. The full list of Semrush and Ahrefs alternatives explains what that mistake costs.
What a cheaper Ahrefs alternative still cannot tell you about your own site
Switching from Ahrefs to SE Ranking changes your bill. It does not change where the numbers come from.
Every tool in the table watches your site from the outside. It samples searches, guesses how many people click each position, and adds it up. Your own analytics sits right beside that estimate, and the two often do not match. Ahrefs says so itself. Its own study of 1,635 sites found a median gap of 49.52% from Google's numbers. It also wrote that on some sites "we can be off by more than 1,000%." That study dates from 2022, so treat it as a warning and not a current score.
Search Console is the other half. It is free, and it comes from Google, so it is the best record of how your pages show up in search. It also has limits worth knowing before you trust one number:
- It reports an average position, so a page that shows up for many overlapping searches can look steadier than it is.
- When an AI Overview appears, Google's Search Console Help says the Overview takes a single position and every link inside it gets that same position.
- It shows what Google chooses to report, not everything that touched your site.
None of that makes it useless. It means one source is never enough.
The free alternative to Ahrefs: your own server logs
There is one more option. Nobody earns a commission on it, so no roundup lists it. Keep your own records.
Ahrefs also gives away a free version for sites you own, called Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. It covers your own site only, with 5,000 crawl credits a month and 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at a time. It is a fair place to start.
I run more than 200 websites on a plain PHP and JSON setup. No database, no WordPress, no separate paid dashboard for each site. Here is why that beats renting one:
- You own it. There is no price email next quarter and no feature moved behind a higher plan.
- It is small enough to understand all the way through, so you are not waiting on a support ticket to learn what it did.
- It is easy to maintain because there is so little to break.
- The data comes off your own server, so the question you ask decides what you see.
A server log records every request to your site. It shows what asked for a page, when it asked, and what came back. It does not guess, and it does not care what an AI Overview did to the click.
One honest limit. A request is not a reader. A log cannot tell you that a person finished the page, so it works best beside Search Console and not instead of it.
What happens to the Ahrefs bill when you add people
Rented tools price growth in steps. You add a person, and the plan you are on stops covering you. Ahrefs charges for every added user, and the price depends on the plan.
Here is a team of five at the monthly list prices. It is the hidden cost behind a number that looks like $129.
Five people on Ahrefs, monthly list prices checked October 5, 2026
| Ahrefs plan | Base price | Four added users | Monthly total | One year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lite | $129 | $160 | $289 | $3,468 |
| Standard | $249 | $240 | $489 | $5,868 |
| Advanced | $449 | $320 | $769 | $9,228 |
What happens to my cost when I add more websites
Here is my own example. In one week I added 78 websites to my BellyUp! city guides. My analytics bill did not change, and I did not need another server. Watching 15 sites costs me the same as watching 205, because my records come from my own server and from Google's free Search Console. Neither one charges by the site.
Two honest limits. A server does have a ceiling, and I have not reached mine. And building the pages still takes my time. What I avoid is paying more for the analytics every time the count goes up.
If you want a setup that grows like this, AIWebsiteSystems.com is where I build them.
Questions to answer before you cancel Ahrefs
- Which Ahrefs report do I open every week, and does the cheaper tool have it?
- Is link building part of my job? If it is, can I test the cheaper tool's link numbers on a site I already know well?
- Have I run the free trial on my own site, or am I comparing feature lists?
- Does the annual discount lock me in before I know if the tool fits?
- If I leave this tool in a year, can I export my data?
- How many people and websites will I have in a year, and what does each extra one cost?
The fourth question catches more buyers than the rest.
