SpyFu is already the cheap one, so name the gap first
SpyFu Basic is $29 a month on annual billing. Most people who search for a cheaper SpyFu are not short on money at that price. They are short on something SpyFu does not give them, or they just saw what the next plan costs and hoped a different logo would fix it.
So before you cancel, name the gap. It is usually one of three:
- Your country is missing, or the numbers for it look thin. SpyFu now lists 38 countries, so check its list first.
- You need more than competitor keyword and ad spying, such as audits, rank tracking or client reports.
- The price jumps when you move up. Pro + AI is $59 for the first month and $119 after that on monthly billing.
A cheaper tool fixes none of the three. A different tool fixes the first two, and the third needs a plan choice, not a new logo.

Cheap alternatives to SpyFu, side by side
The table shows which gap each swap fills and what it gives up. Prices checked October 18, 2026. Annual billing is assumed where it is the normal way to buy.
SpyFu alternatives, published pricing
| Tool | Realistic monthly cost | The gap it fills | What it gives up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mangools | $37.70 annual (Basic), $52.70 Premium | Lower than Pro + AI, with cleaner keyword tools | Ad history and pay-per-click spying |
| SE Ranking | $103.20 annual, $129 monthly | Competitor checks plus audits and tracking | Proof that its history goes back as far |
| KeySearch | $20 annual (Starter), $40 Pro | Simple keyword and competitor checks | Anything beyond keywords |
| Semrush | $117.33 annual, $139 monthly | A bigger platform with more data | It is no longer cheap |
Which SpyFu alternative fits which gap
You mostly do keyword research and want a lower price than Pro + AI. Mangools. Premium is $52.70 a month on annual billing, against $89 for SpyFu Pro + AI. It costs more than SpyFu Basic, though, so this swap only saves money if you were heading to Pro + AI.
You want competitor checks plus audits, tracking and reports. SE Ranking. You get the competitor angle and the rest of an SEO toolset under one login.
You mostly need keyword difficulty. KeySearch. At $20 a month on annual billing, it does that job for little money and little else.
You have outgrown SpyFu and can pay for it. Semrush. Read what Semrush really costs per month first, because seats and add-ons raise the bill.
Years of history are why you bought SpyFu. Stay. SpyFu's own homepage advertises more than 18 years of historical data. Ask any new tool how far back its competitor history goes before you cancel, because a lower price is a bad trade if you lose the one thing you were paying for.
Why a competitor tool cannot tell you the truth about your own site
SpyFu and its alternatives are built to estimate what someone else is doing. That is fine. Everyone who uses them knows the numbers are modeled.
The trouble starts when you turn the same kind of tool toward your own site. Your own site has better records than any outside estimate, and two of them are free.
Search Console is Google's own report on how your pages show up in search. It is the best record of search for your site, and it has limits worth knowing before you trust one number:
- It reports an average position, so a page that shows up for many overlapping searches can look steadier than it is.
- Google says an AI Overview takes a single position, and every link inside it is given that same position, so read position numbers with that in mind.
- It shows what Google chooses to report, not everything that touched your site.
None of that makes it useless. It means one source is never enough.
The free alternative to SpyFu for your own site: server logs
Nobody earns a commission on this option, so no roundup lists it. Keep your own records.
I run more than 200 websites on a plain PHP and JSON setup with no database and no WordPress. Here is why that beats renting a dashboard:
- You own it. There is no price email next quarter and no feature moved behind a higher plan.
- It is small enough to understand all the way through, so you are not waiting on a support ticket to learn what it did.
- It is easy to maintain because there is so little to break.
- The data comes off your own server, so the question you ask decides what you see.
A server log records every request to your site. It shows what asked for a page, when it asked and what came back. It does not guess.
One honest limit. A request is not a reader. A log cannot tell you that a person finished the page, so it works best beside Search Console and not instead of it.
What happens to the SpyFu bill when you grow
SpyFu prices by plan, and each step up costs more. The table shows the monthly price on annual billing.
The jump from Basic to Pro + AI is about three times the price. The jump to the Team plan, which includes 5 users, is more than six times the price of Basic. That is the pattern across this whole category. The bill rises when you add people, projects or features, and the plan you started on rarely stays enough.
SpyFu price per month on annual billing, checked October 18, 2026
| Plan | Price per month | Compared with Basic |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $29 | The starting price |
| Pro + AI | $89 | About three times as much |
| Team | $187 | More than six times as much |
What happens to my cost when I add more websites
Here is my own example. In one week I added 78 websites to my BellyUp! city guides. My analytics bill did not change, and I did not need another server. Watching 15 sites costs me the same as watching 205, because my records come from my own server and from Google's free Search Console. Neither one charges by the site.
Two honest limits. A server does have a ceiling, and I have not reached mine. And building the pages still takes my time. What I avoid is paying more for the analytics every time the count goes up.
If you want a setup that grows like this, AIWebsiteSystems.com is where I build them.
Questions to answer before you cancel SpyFu
- Which gap am I trying to fix: a missing country, more tools, or the price after the first month?
- Which SpyFu report do I open every week, and does the cheaper tool have it?
- Do I rely on years of history? If so, how far back does the new tool go?
- Have I run the free trial on a site I already know?
- Can I export my SpyFu data before I leave?
- How many people and websites will I have in a year, and what does each step up cost?
The first question decides everything after it.
