Webmaster Tools opened existing capabilities to more owners
The announcement offered free access to parts of Site Audit and Site Explorer for verified sites. Ahrefs described the change as wider access to existing tools rather than a wholly new feature set. The product page now points users from the Webmaster Tools name to Ahrefs Free. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools announcement, September 21, 2020; Ahrefs Webmaster Tools and Ahrefs Free
Owning the website changes what you need to buy
Someone trying to find problems on a website they control has a different task from someone investigating dozens of competitors. Free access for verified properties can address part of the first task without settling the second.
Consider a local business owner who wants a clearer view of broken pages and incoming links. Paying for a large competitor-research workflow before understanding that first problem may be unnecessary. An agency comparing unfamiliar markets has a different reason to look at paid access.
How we would start without buying too much
We would begin with a real website the buyer controls and see whether the available reports answer the immediate question. If a needed report or limit prevents the work, that is a specific reason to evaluate paid access. It is more concrete than upgrading because a larger plan sounds professional.
The cheap alternatives to Ahrefs guide is the next comparison. The historical launch post also warns that some older limit details changed later. This page records the access milestone, not a promise that the original quotas still apply.
