Before You Buy Bedroom Furniture in 2026: A Recalled Dresser Got Sold Again

The government's recall database lists about 55 dresser recalls since May 2024. One retailer's recalled dressers were later sold to shoppers through liquidators. And the tip-over rule only covers units 27 inches or taller. Here's what to check before you buy.

Quick Verdict

Ask the seller in writing whether a dresser meets the federal standard, ASTM F2057-23, and was made after September 1, 2023. Anchor every dresser to the wall. For a bed frame, check for a center support leg and slats under 4 inches apart, then use your return window to test it loaded.

This is a planning estimate. The lifespans are our placeholders. Recalls show that price doesn't predict safety, so a pricier piece isn't automatically a safer one.

A Recalled Dresser Got Sold Again

On May 28, 2026, Walmart recalled about 165,000 Mainstays nine-drawer fabric dressers. They were about $80. The tip-over and entrapment risk was serious enough that the notice said to stop using them and return the drawers for a refund.

Then on August 27, the recall was announced a second time. About 165,250 units.

The reason is in the headline of the CPSC notice. Recalled dressers had been sold to consumers afterward through four liquidators.

A recall doesn't always end the sale.

Here's the bigger picture. We counted about 55 recalls with dresser in the title in the CPSC public database between May 2, 2024 and October 8, 2026, covering about 541,000 units. That's our sum. Titles with chest, cabinet or wardrobe are missing, so the true total is higher.

Almost all were for violating the federal standard, not for proven harm. Only four of the 55 listed any incident:

  • Aitjunz: one tip-over report, no injury
  • WLIVE 12-drawer: one report, no injury
  • SEJOV: two instability reports, no injury
  • Winston Porter and Seeday: one tip-over that injured a 3-year-old

Most were sold by marketplace sellers on Amazon, Walmart.com and Wayfair. One recalled line was also sold on Shein, TikTok, Shopify and Temu. Some recalled brands share a maker. Aitjunz, Romorgniz, EnHomee, WLIVE and YITA all appear in the recall list.

One maker. Many names. That defeats checking a brand's reviews.

Price doesn't help either. A Kentfield eight-drawer dresser labeled Solid Wood was recalled in April 2025. About 675 units. $980 to $2,000. Sold at Joybird, Wayfair and AllModern. Made in Indonesia. The remedy was a free repair kit and optional in-home installation.

Older recalls hit expensive furniture too: CB2 Junction chests at $700 to $850 in 2021, Herman Miller and Design Within Reach Nelson dressers at $2,600 to $16,000 in 2020, and Bernhardt Marquesa at $2,000 to $4,200 in 2016.

Why There's a Rule: IKEA MALM and the Child Deaths

The federal rule exists because of a death count.

On June 28, 2016, IKEA recalled about 8 million MALM and 21 million other chests and dressers in the U.S., plus 6.6 million in Canada. That followed a third child death.

On November 21, 2017, it reannounced the recall after an eighth child death. The count was revised to about 17.3 million units. There had been 186 MALM tip-over reports with 91 child injuries. MALM sold for $70 to $200.

On March 4, 2020, IKEA recalled about 820,000 KULLEN three-drawer chests after six tip-over incidents. They cost about $60.

Consumer groups cite CPSC data of at least 234 deaths from clothing-unit tip-overs between January 2000 and April 2022, and about 5,300 emergency room visits a year. That came from a trade-press report of a consumer-group letter. We didn't find the CPSC report itself.

The Federal Rule in Plain English

Congress passed the STURDY Act in December 2022. The CPSC then made ASTM F2057-23 mandatory under 16 CFR 1261.

It covers units manufactured after September 1, 2023. Here's what has to be true for it to apply:

  • Free-standing
  • At least 27 inches tall
  • At least 30 pounds
  • At least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage

Fabric dressers count. Bookcases, office furniture and under-bed units don't. The CPSC page doesn't name nightstands, so most short ones are likely outside it.

To pass, a unit has to survive three tests:

  1. Loaded drawers, with doors and extendible elements open.
  2. A 10-pound horizontal pull at a handhold no higher than 56 inches, held for 10 seconds.
  3. 60 pounds placed on an open drawer while the unit is tilted forward, with a 0.43-inch block that simulates carpet.

Also required:

  • An anti-tip device meeting ASTM F3096, packaged with the unit.
  • A compliance certificate from the manufacturer or importer, citing 16 CFR 1261.

The adopted rule doesn't require a hang tag.

Here's the loophole worth knowing. Units made before September 1, 2023 can still be sold. Consumer groups urged shoppers to ask sellers whether a product meets the standard. They cited penalties of up to $120,000 per violation, a 2023 figure that adjusts each year.

So ask these in writing:

  • Does this unit comply with ASTM F2057-23?
  • When was it manufactured?
  • Can I see the certificate?

Worry about manufactured before September 1, 2023, or no answer.

And anchoring is often your job. Article's white glove delivery excludes installing anti-tip hardware. IKEA's assembly service starts at $52, includes installing tip-over restraints, and secures items to the wall when specified.

Bed Frames That Collapse

A bed frame is a lot of weight sitting on a few pieces of wood.

Recall What happened
Home Design upholstered beds (Jan 18, 2024) About 527,177 units. 128 reports and 36 injuries. $100 to $300 at Wayfair, Walmart.com and Overstock. Made in Malaysia. The remedy was replacement slats and side rails, not a refund. One platform model had no center support leg halfway along the side rail
LUCID platform beds (Sep 19, 2024) About 137,000 units. 245 reports and 18 injuries. $150 to $250. A free replacement frame after you mark the rails recalled
Global Home Imports HR platform frames (Mar 17, 2021) About 82,000 units. 100 collapse reports. About $200, sold at American Furniture Warehouse and Mattress Firm. A repair kit with metal clips
Zinus SmartBase Euro Slats (Feb 23, 2023) About 30,400 units. The assembly kit lacked corner reinforcing brackets. 14 collapse reports
Walker Edison twin-over-twin bunk beds (May 4, 2023) About 121,000 units. Slats break. 14 incidents
Angel Line bunk beds (Dec 22, 2021) About 39,900 units. One death of a 2-year-old in May 2018
Room & Board Griffin bunks (Dec 14, 2023) Some side rail brackets lacked set screws
Merax Murphy beds (Aug 13, 2026) About 1,250 units, $900 to $1,100. Two injuries during assembly when unanchored
FUFU&GAGA wall beds (Dec 4, 2025) About 250 units, with a 215-pound frame. Injuries needing stitches
Samson canopy frames at Costco.com (Apr 2, 2026) About 5,600 units, $900 to $1,000. Five people struck by collapsing beams

That Home Design remedy matters. Replacement slats and rails, emailed after you send a photo of the bed and its law label. Not a refund.

So check the frame before you check the headboard:

  • Center support. Queen and larger need vertical center support. Saatva requires a frame with five or six legs.
  • Slats. Saatva requires slats less than 4 inches apart. A search excerpt of Tempur-Pedic's guidance says at least 3 inches wide and under 4 inches apart. We couldn't open its page.
  • Weight. Add the mattress to the sleepers. Layla's queen foam bed weighs 69 pounds. Adjustable bases publish limits such as 750 or 850 pounds including the mattress. Worry if a listing states no capacity.
  • Hardware. Count the parts against the manual before the delivery crew leaves. The Zinus recall began with a kit that lacked corner brackets.

Will It Fit? Bed Sizes and Room Math

A bedroom is a rectangle you can measure.

Bed Size
Twin 38 x 75 inches
Full 54 x 75 inches
Queen 60 x 80 inches
King 76 x 80 inches
California king 72 x 84 inches

Sleep Foundation advises about 24 inches of clearance around each side. For a queen, that's about 108 by 128 inches. That's our arithmetic.

Mattresses run about 10 to 14.5 inches thick. Add the frame's height yourself.

Then the dresser. Say your room is 126 by 132 inches, with a queen bed and 24 inches clear. The width left is 18 inches. The length left is 132 minus 80, minus 24, minus 18 for a dresser's depth. That's 10 inches. A negative number means it doesn't fit.

What Bedroom Furniture Costs

IKEA's own pages on October 19, 2026:

Item What we saw
Dressers (24 of 158 shown) $69.99 for a 3-drawer pine to $649.99 for an 8-drawer. Most 6-drawer models $129.99 to $399.99
Queen bed frames (16 of 208 shown) $129 for a white one to $849 for upholstered storage. Veneer frames $299 to $399
A documented cut The SONGESAND queen frame fell from $299 to $249 on October 1. That's 16.7 percent

Marketplace dressers that were later recalled ran about $54 to $270. A Laziza three-in-one went for about $870 on Wayfair.

Frames in general: a metal frame runs $50 to $150, and a platform bed $200 to $2,500 and up.

Delivery at IKEA is $19 to $79 depending on tier. The assembly service starts at $52.

For price direction, the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows bedroom furniture down 3.7 percent from a year earlier in September 2026. NPR reported in November 2025 that bedroom furniture was up 11 percent since February 2020, while overall inflation was nearly 26 percent. The producer price index for bedding rose to 254.737 in September from 244.148 in May.

And the returns:

Seller Return window Fees
IKEA 365 days unopened. 180 days opened None listed
Joybird 90 days ready-to-ship. None on made-to-order 50 percent restocking plus shipping. 25 percent on accessories
Ethan Allen 10 days 15 percent restocking. You pay shipping
Article 30 days Shipping deducted

On warranties, Joybird's frames are limited lifetime, footnoted as up to ten years, and springs and bed slats are covered for 3 years. Saatva's bed frames carry a lifetime warranty with upholstery excluded, and nightstands get one year.

For the cheapest honest buy, take a documented markdown on a compliant, returnable item. Avoid clearance dressers that could be pre-September 2023 stock. Clearance is final sale at Joybird and can't be returned at Ethan Allen.

Materials, Tariffs and Seller Games

A few other things to know.

Solid wood isn't proof. The recalled Kentfield was labeled solid wood. Ask the species, and which parts are solid.

Composite wood. Particleboard, MDF and hardwood plywood in finished goods must be TSCA Title VI certified and labeled. The limits are 0.09 parts per million for particleboard, 0.11 for MDF, 0.13 for thin MDF and 0.05 for hardwood plywood. MDF can swell when wet.

Tariffs. The Section 232 furniture duty covers upholstered wooden seating. Beds, headboards and bedroom case goods aren't mentioned in the sources we read. Section 301 tariffs of 10 or 12.5 percent started July 24, 2026. They hit Malaysia and Indonesia at 10 percent and Vietnam and China at 12.5. The recalled bed frames and dressers in this guide were made in Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Reviews. The FTC's reviews rule has been in effect since October 21, 2024. We found no furniture enforcement action.

Sales. We found no dresser or bed-frame price-claim case. We also couldn't verify holiday sale calendars or lead times.

Who Should Buy Now, Wait, or Walk Away

Six rules. Each one comes from the cases above.

  1. Walk away from a tall dresser whose seller can't state compliance

ASTM F2057-23 and a manufacture date after September 1, 2023. In writing.

  2. Walk away from a $100 to $300 marketplace bed frame with no capacity or center support

Unless the slats and legs meet the specs above.

  3. Wait on a used dresser until you've checked the recall list and the label

Walmart's recalled dressers were resold through liquidators.

  4. Buy now when a documented markdown applies to a compliant, returnable item

IKEA's 365-day window gives you time to test it.

  5. Walk away from lifetime frame claims without the footnote

Joybird's reads up to ten years.

  6. Budget the wall anchor and assembly

If white glove delivery excludes anti-tip installation, install it yourself or book the service.

How We Checked It

We read the CPSC's recall notices and database, the federal rule, IKEA's own pages and the seller policies. We checked them on October 19, 2026.

The pages we used:

What we couldn't confirm:

  • How solid wood, veneer and engineered wood are defined or tested for furniture
  • Drawer glide load ratings and assembly times
  • How long dressers and frames last
  • The CPSC report behind the tip-over death statistics
  • Tempur-Pedic's slat and leg requirements from its own page
  • Protection plan prices

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need to anchor my dresser?
Yes, even if the unit is documented as compliant. CPSC recalls describe unanchored dressers as unstable. The federal standard covers units 27 inches or taller made after September 1, 2023, and older stock may still be sold. Consumer groups urge anchoring, especially for older units.
How do I know a dresser meets the federal rule?
Ask the seller whether it complies with ASTM F2057-23 and when it was made. Manufacturers and importers must issue a compliance certificate citing 16 CFR 1261, and an anti-tip device must be in the box. Then check the brand against CPSC recalls, which list about 55 dresser recalls from May 2024 to October 2026.
Do nightstands need to pass the tip-over test?
Only if they meet the scope. That's free-standing, at least 27 inches tall, at least 30 pounds, with 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage. CPSC's page doesn't name nightstands, so most short ones likely fall outside it. A taller chest sold as a nightstand may not. Anchor it anyway.
How far apart should bed slats be?
Tempur-Pedic's guidance, from a search excerpt of its help center, is slats at least 3 inches wide and less than 4 inches apart. Saatva requires under 4 inches and vertical center support for queens and larger. Wider gaps can void a mattress warranty. Check the frame's own spec for capacity as well.
Is solid wood better than MDF or particleboard?
It depends on the part and the build. A Solid Wood dresser at $980 to $2,000 was recalled in 2025 for failing the stability rule. Composite panels carry formaldehyde limits of 0.09 parts per million for particleboard and 0.11 for MDF, and must be labeled. MDF can swell when wet. Ask for the material of each part.
What room size do I need for a queen bed?
The mattress is 60 by 80 inches. Sleep Foundation recommends about 24 inches of space around each side, which works out to about 108 by 128 inches before a dresser. Add the dresser's depth and the drawer pull-out space to your plan.
