The Chairs Break First
A dining set isn't a purchase where you want to find out what's under the seat.
| Recall | What happened |
|---|---|
| Costco 9-piece sets, made by Whalen (recalled Feb 27, 2020) | Sold July to December 2019 for $1,000 to $1,200. About 178 chairs broke across about 8,560 sets. No injuries reported. Full refund |
| Home Depot Windsor chair sets (Feb 25, 2021) | About 3,100 units at about $150 a pair. 17 reports of backs detaching |
| Crate & Barrel Ana chair (Oct 30, 2025) | About 54,930 chairs sold from January 2021 to January 2025 at $300 to $350. 149 reports of broken legs, including 10 injuries to the head, back, arms or face. Free replacement and pickup |
| Grand Rapids Chair Company made-to-order wood chairs (Jul 25, 2024) | 5,670 units at $450 to $1,015. 3 breakage reports. On-site repair |
If each Costco set had eight chairs, that's about 68,000 chairs and a break rate near 0.26 percent. That's our math. CPSC doesn't state chairs per set.
Notice what the last row says. Made-to-order didn't prevent it. Price didn't either.
Tables have failed too:
- CB2 Bordo (Oct 7, 2020): 1,120 units at $1,500 to $2,300. 4 collapses, 3 injuries. Refund.
- RH Byron tables and desks (Oct 16, 2025): about 750 units at $1,700 to $12,000, sold from November 2023 to July 2025. They can collapse when a gap opens between the leg and the top. One collapse caused lacerations. Refund and free pickup.
And glass:
- West Elm Jensen glass tables (Feb 13, 2018): about 5,400 units at $480 to $600. 9 reports of shattering. Free replacement top.
- IKEA GLIVARP extendable tables (Nov 27, 2018): about 8,200 units at about $300. The glass leaf can detach and fall. Refund or replacement.
- The CPSC estimated 20,700 emergency room visits tied to glass tables in 2016. It says tempered glass is designed to break into small pieces, and that scratches or installation errors can cause spontaneous breakage.
Here's the gap.
The CPSC rulebook lists children's chairs, high chairs and folding children's chairs. We found no mandatory strength standard for an adult dining chair. The one federal furniture rule that touches dining chairs is the upholstered flammability rule, 16 CFR 1640.
We found no federal strength standard for the chair your guest leans back in.
So you check it yourself:
- Look for a tested weight in pounds. IKEA lists 243 pounds tested on both its $70 solid-wood chair and its $15 steel chair. Worry if a set states no weight test at all.
- Flip a chair over. The Home Depot recall found chairs with missing screw holes and screws under the seat base. Worry about staple-only joints, missing hardware or wobble in the showroom.
- Search the brand and model on the CPSC recall database before you pay.
And if it's recalled, don't buy it used. The recall notices tell owners to stop using the product.
How Big a Table: The 24-Inch Rule and the 36-Inch Walkway
A table that looks right in a showroom can be wrong in your room.
IKEA says to plan on two feet of width per seat. So a six-seat table with three people on each long side needs at least 6 feet.
The walkway matters just as much. The U.S. Access Board uses 36 inches as the minimum clear width of a walking route. That's a minimum. Chairs pulled out need more.
At 72 inches long and 39.4 wide, a table with 36 inches clear on every side needs about 111 square feet. The calculator above does this for any size.
A few other numbers help:
- Table height. IKEA's tables are 29 1/8 inches high. The ADA range for dining surfaces is 28 to 34 inches, and it keeps the space from 9 to 27 inches above the floor open under a surface as knee clearance. Worry about an apron, leaf rail or pedestal base that cuts into that zone.
- Seat-to-top gap. IKEA pairs those tables with chairs at 17 3/4 to 18 1/8 inches. That's a gap of about 11 inches. Worry about thick aprons or very high seats that leave less.
- Seats 6 to 8. That's a range, not a measurement. IKEA's 92 1/2 inch SKOGSTA is listed that way. At 24 inches per person, it's three or four on each long side. Look for the length in inches.
And measure the route. Doorways, hallways, stair turns and elevators.
Solid Wood Moves With the Seasons
A solid wood top is alive in a way a laminate one isn't.
The U.S. Forest Service's Wood Handbook says furniture-grade wood is supposed to be installed at about 8 percent moisture content, or 6 to 10 percent for single pieces, in most of the country.
Then the air changes. At 70 degrees, wood reaches about 6.2 percent moisture at 30 percent relative humidity. At 60 percent humidity it reaches 11.0.
The Handbook's formula for width change is: width x coefficient x change in moisture. It works between 6 and 14 percent moisture.
Here's our estimate for a 42-inch-wide top moving 4.8 points of moisture:
| Wood | Coefficient | Width change |
|---|---|---|
| Red oak, flat-sawn | 0.00338 | About 0.68 inch |
| Black walnut, flat-sawn | 0.00308 | About 0.62 inch |
| Red oak, quartersawn | 0.00148 | About 0.30 inch |
The Handbook warns the method overestimates the change when boards aren't perfectly flat-sawn.
That's a lot of wood. And it has to go somewhere.
A rigidly fastened top can split or leave a gap at the seam. So ask how the top is attached. Sliding clips or slotted holes allow it to move. That's woodworking practice, and we didn't verify it from a primary standard.
On the other side, plywood has excellent dimensional stability along its length and width, according to the Handbook. Most particle panels swell irreversibly if they get wet.
So kiln-dried isn't an answer by itself. Ask for the moisture target.
Solid, Veneer, Engineered: What the Spec Means
The words on the tag aren't interchangeable.
| On the tag | What it means | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Solid wood | The top and base are boards. The kind that moves | The species, and whether legs and aprons are solid too |
| Oak veneer | A thin wood face on a core | The core material. IKEA's $899.99 veneer table is a particleboard core with thick oak veneer edges |
| Engineered wood | Plywood, particleboard or fiberboard | Plywood is stable. Most particle panels swell if wetted |
| Live edge, reclaimed | We found no verified definition | Photos of the actual slab and how it's stabilized |
| Tempered glass | Designed to break into small fragments | Etched or stamped marks and a retained leaf |
| Made in USA | The FTC has its own rule on this claim | The exact wording of the seller's claim |
On composite wood, any imported finished furniture with particleboard, MDF or hardwood plywood must be TSCA Title VI compliant. A label has been required since March 22, 2019. Worry about imported composite furniture with no label or paperwork.
On stone, the Natural Stone Institute says to use coasters under glasses and trivets for hot items. Sealing doesn't make stone stain proof. Acids such as lemon or vinegar can etch marble and limestone.
IKEA's own examples show the spread:
| Item | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Table, smallest | $69.99 | 43 1/4 x 26 3/8 inches |
| Extendable table | $199.99 | |
| Pine table | $199.99 | |
| SKOGSTA solid acacia | $649.99 | 92 1/2 x 39 3/8 inches, seats 6 to 8 |
| MORBYLANGA oak veneer on particleboard | $899.99 | 86 5/8 x 39 3/8 inches, seats 6. 181 pounds in 3 boxes |
IKEA's dining chairs ran $15 to $200 on the page we read.
What a Dining Set Costs, and When It's Cheapest
Delivery adds up:
| IKEA delivery tier | Member | Non-member |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $19 | $29 |
| Scheduled doorstep | $29 | $39 |
| Scheduled in-home | $59 | $69 |
| Express in-home | $69 | $79 |
In five states (CT, MA, NJ, RI and NY), add $10 to $20.
Then the price trend. The Bureau of Labor Statistics index for living room, kitchen and dining room furniture:
| Month | Index | Change |
|---|---|---|
| September 2024 | 104.759 | |
| September 2025 | 110.968 | +5.9 percent |
| September 2026 | 110.149 | -0.7 percent |
Furniture and bedding as a whole fell 2.4 percent in the year to September 2026. The index jumped in 2025 and eased in 2026. How much of the rise was tariffs isn't established.
There's also a seasonal pattern. Using eight non-pandemic years, we found each month's index as a share of the year's average:
- Lowest: August 98.7 percent, September 99.2, December 99.4, November 99.6
- Highest: April and January 100.7 percent, February and March about 100.3 to 100.4
That's about a two-point gap, across the whole index. It's not the depth of a store sale. A holiday weekend can be deeper.
One documented way to save. IKEA's clearance NORDVIKEN extendable tables were $479.99 (was $639.99) and $399.99 (was $559.99). That's 25.0 and 28.6 percent off, our math. IKEA Family members also get the difference back if the price falls within 90 days.
Returns, Delivery Dates and Your Rights
IKEA's return policy: 365 days for unopened products and 180 days for opened ones with proof of purchase. There's no return at its Planning Studio or Pick Up Point locations.
We couldn't open Crate & Barrel's, Room & Board's or Wayfair's pages. Search summaries suggest 30 days for furniture at some, with custom items, floor samples and clearance final sale. Confirm before you pay.
The federal rules that do apply:
- Ship date and delays. Under the FTC's Mail and Internet Order Rule, if no ship time is stated, the seller needs a reasonable basis to ship within 30 days. If it can't ship on time, it has to ask your consent to a new date, let you cancel, and refund promptly. For most payment types that's 7 working days.
- No three-day right. The FTC's cooling-off rule covers sales at your home or a temporary location. It excludes sales following a visit to a permanent store.
- Card disputes. Send written notice so it reaches the card issuer within 60 days of the first bill showing the error. That includes items not delivered as agreed.
- Warranty terms. For products over $15, the seller must make the written warranty available before the sale.
So ask for the ship date in writing. A missing date means the 30-day default, and only if you ask.
We couldn't verify made-to-order lead times at any retailer. Don't plan around a number someone says.
Tariffs on Tables
The 25 percent Section 232 tariff on certain upholstered wooden furniture, kitchen cabinets and vanities has applied since October 14, 2025. Customs lists 10 percent for the UK and 15 percent for the EU, Japan and South Korea.
The rise to 30 percent was delayed a year, to January 1, 2027.
Here's the catch for table shoppers. The customs overview and the White House fact sheet name upholstered wood furniture. They don't list plain wood tables. Whether your table falls under another heading depends on its tariff code, and we couldn't verify that.
The other moves in 2026:
- The Supreme Court held 6 to 3 in Learning Resources v. Trump that the emergency-tariff law doesn't authorize tariffs.
- A 10 percent Section 122 surcharge followed. Secondary sources date it February 24 to July 24, 2026.
- Section 301 forced-labor tariffs took effect July 24. China, Vietnam and Thailand are at 12.5 percent. Indonesia, Malaysia, Canada and Mexico are at 10. Goods under Section 232 are excluded.
Whether tariffs push 2027 prices up is a rumor, not a fact. The data we have says prices eased.
Fake Reviews and Seller Games
The FTC's reviews rule has been in effect since October 21, 2024. It bans fake reviews, buying positive or negative reviews, undisclosed insider reviews, company-run independent review sites and review suppression.
On December 22, 2025, the FTC sent warning letters to 10 companies. It didn't release their names. It noted civil penalties of up to $53,088 per violation.
We found no completed penalty case under the rule, and no furniture-specific fake-certification case.
So what do you do? Look at the chairs. Look at the weight rating. Look at the recall database.
And read reviews for the word wobble.
Who Should Buy Now, Wait, or Walk Away
Six rules. Each one comes from the numbers above.
-
Buy now if you've measured and 36 inches fits on every side
Use the calculator above for the footprint.
-
Buy now from a seller with a long return window if you need it in 30 days
IKEA's is 365 days unopened.
-
Wait for late summer through December if the date is flexible
The price index runs about two points lower than in January to April.
-
Wait if it's made to order and no ship date is in writing
The 30-day default only protects you if you ask.
-
Walk away from sets with no chair weight rating
And from anything already on the recall list.
-
Walk away from a solid top with rigid fasteners and no explanation
Especially one wider than about 30 inches. The wood will move.
How We Checked It
We read the CPSC's recall notices, the U.S. Forest Service's Wood Handbook, the FTC's rules and IKEA's own pages. We checked them on October 19, 2026. Most big furniture retailers blocked automated checks, so IKEA was the only seller whose prices and policies we read first-hand.
The pages we used:
- CPSC on the Crate & Barrel Ana chair
- CPSC on the RH Byron tables
- CPSC on the Costco Bayside dining sets
- CPSC on the CB2 Bordo tables
- CPSC's tempered glass safety alert
- The Forest Service Wood Handbook, chapter on moisture
- The Wood Handbook chapter on drying and dimensional change
- IKEA's dining tables and return policy
- The FTC's mail order rule guide
- The FTC's reviews rule Q&A
- The U.S. Access Board's guide to accessible routes
- Customs' tariff overview
What we couldn't confirm:
- Return terms at Crate & Barrel, Room & Board and Wayfair
- Made-to-order lead times
- Protection plan prices and claim rates
- Finish durability tests for heat, water rings and scratches
- Used and refurbished savings
- Whether a plain solid-wood table falls under any Section 232 tariff code
