Every Maker Raised the Price After You Could Have Bought
You bought the last one at one price. The next one costs more.
That is not a rumor. It is three price notices in six months.
| Console | Old price | New price | Rise | Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 disc | $549.99 | $649.99 | 18.2% | April 2, 2026 |
| Xbox Series X | $649.99 | $799.99 | 23.1% | August 1, 2026 |
| Xbox Series S 512 GB | $399.99 | $499.99 | 25.0% | Reported, secondary source |
| Switch 2 | $449.99 | $499.99 | 11.1% | September 1, 2026 |
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition sits at $599.99 and the PS5 Pro at $899.99. Sony's own store page still showed those prices on October 19, 2026, and listed some models as unavailable.
The percentage rises are our arithmetic from the list prices.
The sticker price is the smallest number in this guide.
Why? Microsoft said console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x. It said it expects another doubling by fall 2027. Nintendo named memory costs among other factors. Tariffs matter less now. The Supreme Court held on February 20, 2026 that the IEEPA does not authorize tariffs, and new Section 301 duties of 10 to 12.5 percent on 60 economies began July 24.
Here's one claim to ignore. Several aggregator sites say Sony cut the PS5 back on August 21, 2026. We couldn't verify it. Sony's blog and store don't show it. We treat it as false until Sony posts it.
The Microsoft quote comes from a report that quotes the company. We couldn't open a Microsoft page directly.
The Console Is About a Third of the Bill
A console is a three to five year bet on one company's prices, one store's licenses and one memory market that is broken right now.
Here's the same bet on the calculator above. A PS5 disc, one 1 TB drive, the $79.99 annual online plan and four $69.99 games a year, kept three years:
| Piece | Cost |
|---|---|
| PS5 disc console | $649.99 |
| 1 TB storage drive | $270.00 |
| Online plan, 3 years at $79.99 | $239.97 |
| 12 games, 4 a year at $69.99 | $839.88 |
| Three-year total | $1,999.84 |
That is $55.55 a month. And 67.5 percent of it is not the console.
The drive is our estimate. The $69.99 game price and the four-games habit are our placeholders. Change them to match your real life.
Here's what sits behind the plan line. These are Sony's own prices:
| PS Plus tier | Month | 3 months | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 |
Monthly and quarterly prices rose May 20, 2026. The 12-month prices did not change. Paying yearly on Essential is 39 percent cheaper than twelve monthly payments, our arithmetic.
Game Pass prices run $9.99 for Essential, $14.99 for Premium and $22.99 for Ultimate each month. PC Game Pass is $13.99. Those are from Video Games Chronicle and Wikipedia, not from Microsoft's own pages.
We couldn't verify Nintendo Switch Online prices. The numbers we found came from aggregator sites.
Subscriptions Changed Twice This Year
Game Pass Ultimate went to $29.99 on October 1, 2025. That was about 50 percent more.
Then on April 21, 2026, Microsoft cut it to $22.99. The catch: new Call of Duty games now arrive about a year later instead of on day one.
Cloud gaming hours are reported to be capped at 5 to 15 a month from November 2026. That is a secondary report of a CNBC story. We couldn't confirm the exact caps.
What a subscription is worth depends on how many games you would buy anyway. Our arithmetic at $69.99 a game:
- Game Pass Ultimate costs $275.88 a year. That equals 3.9 games.
- Game Pass Premium costs $179.88 a year. That equals 2.6 games.
- PS Plus Extra costs $134.99 a year. That equals 1.9 games.
If you'd buy more games than that, subscribing wins. If you'd play two titles all year, it doesn't.
Can you cancel easily? Maybe not as easily as you'd hope.
The FTC's "click-to-cancel" rule was vacated by the Eighth Circuit on July 8, 2025. The FTC restored the earlier rule on February 12, 2026 and asked for comment on a new rulemaking on March 13. We found no proposed rule in the Federal Register after that.
The Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act still covers online subscriptions. The FTC calls it the only federal law primarily designed for this, limited to internet sales.
Amazon agreed on September 25, 2025 to pay $1 billion in civil penalties and $1.5 billion in refunds over Prime enrollment and cancellation.
California's law covers personal, family and household use. It requires a notice 15 to 45 days before an annual plan renews. It lets you cancel the same way you signed up. Illinois has a similar law.
"Buy Now" Doesn't Mean You Own It
You pay $69.99. You click Buy Now. You own the game.
No. You bought a license.
Sony's terms grant buyers a limited, revocable license. A proposed class action filed around June 18, 2026 says the checkout language breaks California's AB 2426 digital-goods disclosure law. The suit has no ruling in the sources we found.
AB 2426 took effect January 1, 2025. A January 2026 suit hit GameStop's store the same way. One source says it was voluntarily dismissed. Another says only that it was filed.
A library worth hundreds of dollars sits on a license somebody can revoke.
Here's the case people point to.
Ubisoft shut The Crew's servers on March 31, 2024 and began revoking licenses. A French consumer group, UFC-Que Choisir, sued Ubisoft on March 31, 2026.
The European "Stop Destroying Videogames" petition drew 1,294,188 valid signatures. The European Commission replied on June 16, 2026 that it would not propose a legal obligation to keep games playable. The UK government made no law change.
Platform terms can change after you pay too. In May 2024 Sony required a PlayStation Network account for Helldivers 2 on PC. It pulled sales in 177 territories, then reversed the rule after about two days. The sales restriction lasted until June 14, 2025.
Before you buy a digital library, read the checkout line. If losing the library would hurt, price a disc.
The Storage Tax
The cheap console needs a second purchase.
Here's what each one accepts:
| Console | What it takes | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | M.2 NVMe, PCIe Gen 4 x4, up to 8 TB | PCIe 3.0 drives aren't supported |
| Switch 2 | microSD Express, up to 2 TB | Ordinary microSD cards only hold screenshots and video |
| Xbox Series | Proprietary expansion cards | Sold by Seagate and WD |
We found no verified price for Switch 2 microSD Express cards or Xbox expansion cards. We won't guess.
For the PS5, drive prices are the story. Reading PCPartPicker's charts by eye, a 1 TB NVMe drive averaged about $100 eighteen months ago and about $270 now. A 2 TB drive went from about $175 to about $455.
That is 2.7 times in 18 months. Treat those as estimates, because they come from chart images and the averages include premium models.
And per Wikipedia's summary of Sony's support page, games have to sit on internal or M.2 storage to play.
What do you do? Price the drive before you pick the console. Compare the all-in number, not the sticker.
Disc, Digital and the Game-Key Trap
A disc PS5 costs $50 more than the Digital Edition.
But adding the disc drive later costs about $80. Waiting costs $30 more.
Nintendo's Switch 2 has its own twist. Some boxed games ship a Game-Key Card. The card holds only a license. The files download to the console and the card has to stay in to play.
That is not a cartridge. It is a download with a plastic key.
Switch 2 consoles using flashcarts or second-hand game cards were reportedly banned from online service. That drew a complaint from Brazil's consumer agency.
One more shelf problem. A New York GameStop stapled receipts to Switch 2 boxes and punctured screens. GameStop replaced the units. Check the box before you leave the store.
If you want to resell games, you need discs. If you want to play without swapping them, digital is easier. Decide before you buy the console, because the Digital Edition is cheaper only if you never add the drive.
Sony also sells certified refurbished consoles at up to $100 off. For a PS5 you will keep, that is the cheapest honest buy we found.
PC Parts: Memory Went Up Five Times
If you're building a gaming PC, brace yourself.
Reading PCPartPicker's trend charts by eye, here's what happened over about 18 months. The values are estimates:
| Part | Mid-2025 | October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 32 GB DDR5-6000 memory kit | about $115 to $125 | about $630 |
| 32 GB DDR4-3200 kit | about $70 | about $285 |
| 1 TB NVMe drive | about $100 | about $270 |
| 2 TB NVMe drive | about $175 | about $455 |
| RTX 5070 graphics card | about $700 | about $985 |
| RTX 5060 Ti | about $495 | about $770 |
| RX 9070 XT | about $850 | about $1,130 |
The launch prices were $549 for the RTX 5070, $379 for the 8 GB RTX 5060 Ti and $429 for the 16 GB one, and $599 for the RX 9070 XT.
The four graphics cards all jumped between late July and September 2026.
Other sources disagree on the exact number. One listed the RTX 5070 at $1,010.92 on October 9. Another listed $900 for a row dated August 10. Use ranges and dates, not one number.
Tom's Hardware is cited for an RTX 5090 listing at $8,500 on Amazon in October 2026. That is a secondary report.
Microsoft says memory and storage prices will double again by fall 2027. A TrendForce page from July says PC memory contract prices were expected to keep rising in the third and fourth quarters. That is a search summary.
So if your current PC works, wait. We found no source that shows relief before 2027.
Prebuilt or Build: Price the Whole Parts List
A prebuilt can be cheaper than the parts.
Here's the math. A do-it-yourself RTX 5070 at about $985 plus 32 GB of DDR5 at about $630 is about $1,615 for two parts. That's before the processor, board, power supply, case and SSD.
A $1,699.99 RTX 5070 prebuilt with 32 GB of DDR5 is plausibly cheaper than building. System makers buy memory on contracts. That is our inference from estimates, not a verified comparison.
But prebuilts cut corners. These are from a PC Gamer deals list, an affiliate listicle we used only to see what buyers meet:
- $849: an RTX 5060 with 16 GB of DDR4
- $1,149.99: an RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB with one 16 GB DDR4 stick, down from $1,399.99
- $1,699.99: an RTX 5070 with 32 GB of DDR5
- $1,899.99: an RX 9070 XT with 16 GB of DDR5
- $2,299.99: an RX 9070 XT, a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 32 GB and 2 TB
The writer says there has been a dire lack of decent $1,000 to $1,500 PCs for months because of the memory shortage.
One stick of memory means single channel. PC Gamer says it costs a small chunk of frame rate. A $599.99 Ryzen 5 5600GT box shipped with a 512 GB drive that holds few games.
What to demand before you pay:
- Two memory sticks, not one
- At least 16 GB of memory, with 32 GB being comfortable
- A 1 TB SSD or bigger
- The power supply wattage in writing. 650 W was called ample for a 5060 Ti box.
- A board that takes DDR5. AM5 boards take DDR5 only. Intel LGA 1700 boards take DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the board.
And check the was price. The FTC's rule at 16 CFR 233.1 says a former price must be the actual, bona fide price offered on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period. A "was $1,399.99" claim is checkable against price history.
Graphics Cards: Fakes, Look-Alikes and Melting Plugs
A graphics card can cost more than the console. That's why people fake them.
Relabeled and dummy cards. Tom's Hardware reported in March 2025 an RTX 3090 sold as an RTX 4090 with a fake AD102 label on a re-lapped die. A June 2026 report describes fake ASUS RTX 4090 cards carrying plastic chips. A repair channel opened a $350 dead 4090 and found a dummy chip and the wrong memory type.
Software reflash can change the reported name and memory size. It can't change the chip or add chips.
We read those through search summaries. The article bodies were blocked.
Same name, different card. The RTX 5060 Ti sold in 8 GB ($379) and 16 GB ($429) versions. The RX 9060 XT sold in 8 GB ($299) and 16 GB ($349) versions.
Nvidia didn't give 8 GB review samples to reviewers before launch. Tom's Hardware found the 8 GB version struggled at higher resolutions.
A claim built on frame generation. Nvidia's RTX 4090 performance at $549 for the RTX 5070 relied on DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. Ars Technica and PC Gamer disputed it, per a reference page. Ask for raw benchmarks.
Missing parts, no recall. In February 2025 Nvidia confirmed some RTX 5090, 5090D, 5080 and 5070 Ti cards were missing 8 render units. It said under 0.5 percent were affected and called it a production anomaly. Owners were sent to their card maker, not a recall.
Melting connectors. The 12VHPWR and 12V-2x6 connector has melted on RTX 4090 and 5090 cards. Der8auer measured a hotspot near 150 C on an RTX 5090 Founders Edition cable in February 2025. The US CPSC announced a recall of CableMod angled adapters on February 8, 2024, citing 272 reports and about 25,300 units.
ASRock and Sapphire RX 9000 owners reported burned connectors in August and November 2025. Both were on power supplies that weren't ATX 3.1.
Before you pay:
- Read the VRAM line, not the model name
- Match the connector to an ATX 3.1 supply
- Seat the plug fully, with no gap, and recheck it after heavy use
- Buy from a seller marked sold and shipped by a known retailer
Used, Refurbished and Rented
A used graphics card can save money. It can also be a brick.
One used RTX 5070 listed at $715 against $1,010.92 new. That is 29 percent under. A much bigger gap is a warning.
Ask for:
- A GPU-Z screenshot beside a handwritten note
- Photos of the circuit board and back plate
- One benchmark run, compared with a published result for that model
We found no controlled test of ex-mining cards. Forum posts split. One test showed memory 7 C cooler after a pad swap (66 C against 73 C). Another owner saw 106 C memory temps after repadding a card mined for about two years. Both are anecdotes.
For a console, new wins when a first-party warranty and return window matter. Refurbished from Sony wins for a PS5 you will keep.
Financing exists. Xbox lists pay monthly with 0% interest on its console page. We didn't retrieve the term length or credit terms.
Returns vary by retailer. Best Buy is 15 days standard and 60 for paid members. Opened physical software is exchange-only. We couldn't retrieve the policies of Amazon, Micro Center, Newegg or Walmart. We also missed GameStop and Target. Check each one.
Warranty tie-ins: the FTC says a written warranty generally can't require branded parts or service. A maker can still deny coverage for damage the part caused. Ask what voids coverage before you add your own SSD.
And pay by credit card. You have 60 days to dispute a billing error. Liability for unauthorized charges is capped at $50.
When to Buy
Here's what the calendar says.
- April 2, 2026: PS5 hike
- April 21, 2026: Game Pass cut
- May 20, 2026: PS Plus monthly hike
- August 1, 2026: Xbox hike
- September 1, 2026: Switch 2 hike
- July 24, 2026: Section 301 duties began
- November 27, 2026: Black Friday. Cyber Monday is November 30. That is calendar arithmetic from Thanksgiving on November 26.
We found no verified console discount for the 2026 holidays. Don't assume one.
Rumors and unconfirmed items:
- A Bloomberg report, via Push Square, says Sony is considering a PS6 delay to 2028 or even 2029.
- A next Xbox in 2027 comes from AMD comments, via secondary reports.
- An October 17 report says the RTX 5090 is being discontinued. Nvidia said it will continue to ship.
- An RTX 5080 with 24 GB is a rumor.
We didn't verify any of them.
The best time to buy is after the confirmed price moves are done, and only if you need the box. The worst time is right after a stock sell-out, when a marketplace listing sits at several times the list price.
One warning on stores. Treat any best deals list as a sales channel. PC Gamer's page carries an affiliate disclosure. We used it for what buyers will see, not as proof.
Who Should Buy Now, Wait, or Walk Away
Six rules. Each one comes from the cases above.
-
Buy now if you need a console for the holidays
Every maker has already moved. Microsoft says memory costs double again by fall 2027.
-
Wait on memory, SSD and graphics card upgrades
If your PC works, wait. Averages are up 2 to 5 times and no source shows relief before 2027.
-
Buy a prebuilt only after pricing the parts yourself
Check for two memory sticks, a 1 TB drive and a decent power supply. See the laptop guide if a portable is the better fit.
-
Walk away from a used graphics card with no proof of the chip
Far under the 29 percent used discount is a warning sign, not a deal.
-
Walk away from digital-only if losing the library would hurt
Read the license line at checkout first.
-
Skip 8 GB graphics cards for new 1440p builds
Reviewers found them limited. Pair the build with a screen from the TV guide or a good headset from the headphones guide.
