A heat pump is an HVAC system that transfers heat from one place to another. In cooling mode it moves heat out of the home. In heating mode it pulls available heat from outdoor air or another source and moves it indoors.
For buyers, the important issue is not just the label "heat pump." The real buying questions are sizing, low-temperature performance, ductwork, electrical needs, installer quality, and backup-heat strategy.
